Fabular Review: First Impressions
The goal of Fabular is to save the kingdom from the evil Void Loids - who are wreaking havoc across the realm.
If you are a fan of games like FTL, then Fabular might be right up your alley.
You choose a spaceship and set forth on your adventure through the galaxy.
Each encounter is random, and you may find a trader, a friendly family inviting you for dinner, or pirates and marauders waiting to ambush you.
Each map shows you the end goal and the starting position, then everything in-between is hidden.
When you encounter enemies during your adventure in Fabular, it switches to a small top-down map view.
Your spaceship has two large swords for close combat and a plasma cannon for ranged combat.
The controls take some getting used to, as it feels like you are sliding around the map on ice.
Each shot counts, and using the environment around you means you can throw enemies against asteroids or dodge ranged attacks.
Your health is precious, so mastering the movements is just as important as learning sword combat.
At the end of each combat, you will be given a sizeable golden chest to open. Inside you will find resources and items to help you along your journey.
You will typically find:
- health potions
- upgrades to boost your ship movement or attack
- currency to shop with
Just like FTL, getting the right drops in Fabular can be the difference between life and death.
Fabular was featured as a kickstarter in 2017 and had since gained massive hype over its unique design, modern animation, and exciting rogue-lite game mechanics.
Should You Buy And Play Fabular?
Fabular is a new take on the FTL style of games, where you play a knight that fights against evil to save his kingdom.
Each map is full of random encounters, with random enemies and NPCs with stories to immerse you in the universe.
The combat feels squishy (in a good way) where each shot you take is damaging, and mastering the movement is just as important as mastering the sword combat.
The game has good progression and replayability with new ships to unlock and upgrades for your current one.
If you are a fan of rogue-lite games or FTL (Faster Than Light), then you will definitely enjoy Fabular!
It will be released sometime in 2021, so stay tuned as we cover more on Black Legend as details are released.
Pros:
- Modern pixel art with 60FPS animation for smooth combat
- Fun FTL style rogue-lite
- Replayable with heaps of progression through ship upgrades and unlockables
Cons:
- Combat style might not be for everyone
Verdict
Great design mixed with fast 60FPS animation to keep combat smooth. Replayable and fun rogue-lite that keeps you interested with new ships, upgrades and random encounters. If you are a fan of FTL, then definitely check out Fabular!
